Tigers Edged by Griffins at the Buzzer



Philadelphia, Pa. – The Holy Family University men's basketball team suffered a heart-breaking loss to city rival Chestnut Hill College as Amir Warrick knocked down a game-winning three-pointer as time expired to give the Griffins a 70-67 win in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action on Wednesday night at Sorgenti Arena.

Game Recap
 
* Holy Family erased a 10-point deficit with four minutes remaining in regulation to tie the game at 67-67 after junior Brendan Hoban (Watertown, Mass./Millbrook) secured an offensive rebound and followed with a three-pointer to tie the score. However, on the ensuing possession after a timeout, Warrick was able to get a shot off from deep range to give the Griffins a 70-67 victory as time expired.
 
* The Tigers overcame multiple double-digit deficits in the second half and trailed by as many as 12 points in the half with the latter coming at the 13:25 mark with the score in favor of the Griffins, 48-36. Chestnut Hill held its last double-digit advantage (63-53) with 4:11 to play and that's when the Tigers made a run. Hoban jump-started the run with a three-pointer and on the next possession senior Vincenzo Dalessandro (Levittown, Pa./Conwell Egan (Pace Univ.)) scored came through with a key tip-in basket to make the score 63-58.  The Tigers came within three points twice before Hoban's three-pointer with 10 seconds on the clock tied the game.
 
* In the first half the Tigers held their biggest lead of the game at the 13:26 mark when sophomore Eric Esposito (Langhorne, Pa./Conwell Egan) made the score 15-6 with a tip-in basket.  A 14-5 run by the Griffins tied the game at 20-20 with 8:32 to play until halftime.  Both teams would exchange leads multiple times before the Griffins capped the scoring in the opening half to lead 33-32 at halftime.
 
News and Notes
 
* Senior Branden Aughburns (Queens, N.Y./The Canterbury School (Hampton Univ.)) recorded his sixth double-double of the season and his third in as many games as he finished with a game-high 20 points to go along with 10 rebounds.  He also blocked four shots on defense.
 
* Hoban totaled 10 points on the night and dished out a game-high seven assists.  He also had three steals.  Esposito also scored in double-figures as he totaled 12 points and five boards.
 
* Junior Devon Moore (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic (Merrimack College0) added nine points, while Dalessandro and freshman Daniel Fleming (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield) each contributed eight points.  Dalessandro also grabbed seven rebound.
 
* Trevonn Pitts totaled 20 points to lead the Griffins.  Keyon Butler added 16 points, while Warrick (11) and Scottie Spann (10) each finished in double-figures off the bench.  Spann grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds to record a double-double.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 25th meeting between Holy Family and Chestnut Hill since the start of the 2007-08 season.  The Tigers are now 18-7 versus the Griffins in the all-time series.  The win by Chestnut Hill snapped Holy Family's 11 game winning streak in the series.
 
Next Up
Holy Family returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 21 as the Tigers host city rival Jefferson in a CACC contest.  Game time is set for 2 p.m. from inside the Campus Center Gymnasium.  During halftime of the game, Holy Family will honor its Hall of Fame Class of 2019 that will be officially inducted later that evening at the Hall of Fame Ceremony, including legendary head coach Dan Williams. The rest of the class includes, Catherine Carr '11 (women's basketball), Melissa Murphy '03 (women's soccer), Allison Maddock '01 (softball) and Mike McLaughlin (women's basketball head coach).
