Tigers Drop Season Opener at American Int'l



Springfield, Mass. - The Holy Family University men's basketball team opened the 2019-20 season on the road at American International College and came up short versus the Yellow Jackets, 86-71, in a non-conference contest on Saturday night at Butova Gymnasium.

Game Recap
 
* American International closed out the final six minutes of the first half on a 19-7 run to take control of the game.  With the Tigers leading 26-25 after junior Brendan Hoban (Watertown, Mass./Millbrook) converted three free throws after being fouled attempting a three-pointer, AIC scored the next 10 points of the game to jump-start its run.  The Yellow Jackets led 44-33 at the half.
 
* In the second half the Yellow Jackets maintained their double-digit lead through majority of the half.  The Tigers went on a mini 6-0 run late in the half to cut the deficit down to nine points after a layup basket by senior Branden Aughburns (Queens, N.Y./The Canterbury School (Hampton Univ.)) made the score 69-60 with 6:55 to play.
 
* Nine points was as close as the Tigers would get of the lead as AIC quickly built its double-digit advantage by scoring the next five points to lead 73-60 at the 5:32 mark.
 
* Holy Family led 18-10 at the 11:27 mark of the first half after breaking an 8-8 tie with a 10-2 run fueled by two three-pointers by Hoban.
 
News and Notes
 
* Junior Devon Moore (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic (Merrimack College0) finished with a team-high 21 points in his first game with the Tigers.  Moore, who is no stranger to the NE10 after transferring to HFU from Merrimack College, knocked down five three-pointers (5-11) to go along with three assists.
 
* Aughburns recorded a double-double as he totaled 15 points and a team-high 11 boards. Aughburns shot 7-of-14 from the field and was 1-of-2 from deep range.
 
* Hoban totaled 15 points as well in his debut with the Tigers. He shot 4-of-9 from the field, including a pair of three-pointers.  He converted 5-of-7 from the free throw line. Hoban led the team with four assists.
 
* AIC had four players score in double-digits, including Goree Venable who finished with a team-high 20 points after shooting a perfect 9-of-9 from the field. Shyheim Hicks finished with 15 points, while Zekiah Owens added 14 points.  Logan Santiago ended the night with 13 points.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 10th meeting between Holy Family and AIC since the start of the 2007 season. The Tigers are now 2-8 versus the Yellow Jackets in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Holy Family returns to action on Sunday as the Tigers face Franklin Pierce University in a non-conference contest at AIC.  Game time is set for 12 p.m.
