Tigers Take Down Eagles in CACC Action



Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University women's volleyball team defeated Post University in a rematch of last years Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) championship final by the score of 3-0 on Saturday afternoon from inside the Campus Center Gymnasium.

Match Recap
 
* Holy Family jumped out to a 1-0 match lead after taking the first set by the score of 25-19.  The Tigers led 16-10 the Eagles made a run late to come within one point of the lead at 17-16.  Two service aces by sophomore Morgan Silks (Norristown, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll) sandwiched between two attack errors by the Eagles increased the Tigers' lead to 21-16.
 
* The second set the Eagles erupted with five straight points to open the set, but the Tigers responded with five straight points as well to tie the set at 5-5.  The back-and-forth battle continued deep into the set.  With the set tied 16-16, the Tigers tallied three straight points to lead 19-16.  Post made things interesting at 19-18, but the Tigers followed with the set's final six points to grab the 25-18 victory. The Tigers closed the set with four straight kills.
 
* In the final set of the afternoon the Tigers overcame a 9-2 deficit to complete the sweep. Trailing 12-7, the Tigers rolled off seven straight points to grab a 14-12 advantage. Post would grab the lead at 15-14, but that would be the Eagles final lead of the afternoon.  Holy Family rallied with four straight points and went on to take the set, 25-21.
 
News and Notes
 
*  Junior Carly Covington (Delmar, Md./Delmar) set a new career-high with 20 kills as she led the Holy Family attack that produced 47 kills in the match.  Covington also added 13 digs.
 
* Silks led the match with 42 assists as she now has over 2,000 for her career. She is one of three other players in program history to record over 2,000 career assists joining former standouts Aimee Drabyn (3,889) and Chelsea Keegan (Bucyrus, Ohio/Colonel Crawford) (3,142).
 
* Junior Gianna Pesognelli (Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle) finished with 10 kills, while fellow classmate Camille Johnson (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) added six.
 
* Post was led by Shannon Veale who finished with 11 kills and nine digs.  Kim Buttery finished with 18 assists and eight digs.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 23rd meeting between Holy Family and Post since the start of the 2003 season.  The Tigers are now 13-10 versus the Eagles having won the previous three meetings in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Holy Family returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 8 as the Tigers host Wilmington University in a CACC contest. Match time is set for 6 p.m.
