Tigers Extend Win Streak to Five Straight Matches



Newark, Del. - The Holy Family University women's volleyball team won its final two matches on the final day of the Wildcat Regional Tournament hosted by Wilmington University on Saturday.  The Tigers picked up victories over Franklin Pierce University (W, 3-0) and Southern Connecticut State University (W, 3-1) to finished the tournament with a perfect 4-0 record.

How It Happened (vs. Franklin Pierce)
 
* The offense and defense was clicking on all cylinders versus Franklin Pierce in the opening match.  The Tigers recorded 44 kills with a season-best .323 hitting percentage.  It marked the first time all season the team was above .300 percent hitting.  On the other side, the defense held the Ravens to a .031 hitting percentage; the lowest by a Holy Family opponent this year. 
 
* Holy Family led majority of the match with its biggest deficit to overcome coming in the third set when the Tigers trailed 4-2. 
 
How It Happened (vs. So. Connecticut
 
*  Holy Family grabbed the first two sets to take control of the match.  In the first set the Tigers used 5-0 run to break a 6-6 tie to pull away from the Owls. Holy Family led by as many as eight points (18-10) and went on to take the set, 25-19. 
 
* The second set was more of a back-and-forth battle between the two teams.  The set featured seven ties and five lead changes. Holy Family grabbed the final lead change after four straight points lead to a 21-19 advantage. The Owls would tie the match at 21-21 but the Tigers never relinquished the lead and took the set 25-23.
 
* The Owls took the third set to make it 2-1 in the match but the Tigers bounced back with a big win in the fourth to claim their fifth straight victory.  Holy Family led majority of the set but the Owls stayed close throughout as they grabbed the lead twice. After grabbing the lead back at 17-15 Holy Family stayed in control until the Owls tied things at 24-24. Both teams exchanged points until the Tigers scored the final two points for a 27-25 win.
 
News and Notes
 
* Senior Chase Wassel (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) was named to the All-Tournament team at the conclusion of the Wildcat Regional Tournament.  She averaged 5.14 kills per for the tournament after totaling 16 kills versus Franklin Pierce and 13 more against So. Connecticut.
 
* Against Franklin Pierce, freshman Morgan Silks (Norristown, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll) totaled 31 assists to go along with a match-high 16 digs.  She followed that up with 50 assists against to Owls to increase her season total to 11.59 assists per set.
 
* Senior Jaime Bonner (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) finished the day with eight kills in each match. 
 
* Sophomore Carly Covington (Delmar, Md./Delmar) led the team with 16 kills against the Owls to go along with 13 digs.
 
* Junior Gianna Pesognelli (Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle) totaled 13 kills versus So. Connecticut to set a new season-high.  She also finished with four total blocks (1BS/3BA) to tie her season-best.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the sixth meeting between Holy Family and Franklin Pierce since the start of the 2013 season.  After dropping the first four matches of the series, the Tigers have won two straight and are now 2-4 versus the Ravens.  Holy Family and So. Connecticut faced one another for the first time since 2014.  The Tigers are now 3-4 versus the Owls in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Holy Family returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 11 as the Tigers resume Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play to face city rival University of the Sciences on the road.  Match time is set for 7 p.m.
