Tigers Roll Past City Rival Devils, 3-0



Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University women's volleyball team won its sixth straight match after shutting down the University of the Sciences by the score of 3-0 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest on Tuesday night.

How It Happened
 
* The Holy Family offense produced 42 kills compared to just 25 by the Devils on its way to the three-set victory.  The Tigers took the first set with ease coming away with a double-digit victory.  Leading 11-7 the Tigers went on an 8-1 run to make the score 19-8 before closing out the set with a 25-15 win.
 
* Holy Family took both the second and third sets by identical 25-22 scores. In the second set the Tigers trailed 14-13, but took advantage of three straight miscues by the Devils to take the lead.  Freshman Tayana Bennett (Philadelphia, Pa./Hill-Freedom World Academy) then came through with a kill to give the Tigers a 17-14 lead before the next Devils point. From there the Tigers never trailed and took the set to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
* In the third set the Tigers scored five of the final six points to clinch the victory.  Senior Chase Wassel (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) recorded back-to-back kills to finish off the set at 25-22.
 
News and Notes
 
* Wassel and sophomore Carly Covington (Delmar, Md./Delmar) combined for 32 of the team's 42 kills.  Wassel finished with a match-high 19 kills to go along with seven digs and three aces.  Covington totaled 13 kills while recording an impressive .458 hitting percentage.  She committed only two errors on the night on 24 total attempts.
 
* Freshman Morgan Silks (Norristown, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll) paced the offense with a match-high 35 assists to go along with nine digs.
 
* Junior Jillian Boyle (North Andover, Mass./North Andover (Rivier College)) led the team with 18 digs, while junior Gianna Pesognelli (Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle) led the team with four aces.
 
* For the Devils, Rhiannon Comia led the match with 25 digs.
 
CACC Weekly Honors
For the third straight week a Holy Family student-athlete was named CACC Player of the Week.  This week Wassel donned the honors whereas the previous two weeks included Covington and Pesognelli.  Furthermore, Silks hit the three-peat in earning Setter of the Week honors for the third consecutive week.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 32nd meeting between Holy Family and USciences dating back to the 2003 season.  The Tigers are now 19-13 versus the Devils in the all-time series and have won the last four matches versus their city rival.
 
Next Up
Holy Family returns to action on Friday, Sept. 14 as the Tigers host another city rival in Jefferson in a CACC contest.  Match time is set for 6 p.m. from inside the Campus Center Gymnasium.
