Tigers Sweep on Day One of Wildcat Regional Tournament



Newark, Del. - The Holy Family University women's volleyball team picked up a pair of victories against non-conference opponents on day one of the Wildcat Regional Tournament hosted by Wilmington University on Friday.  The Tigers defeated American International College, 3-1, and went on to shutout Merrimack College, 3-0, to close out the day.

How It Happened (vs. American Int'l)
 
* Holy Family recorded 15 kills in the first set with a hitting percentage of .267 as the Tigers made quick work the Yellow Jackets.  Holy Family committed just three errors in the set on the way to a 25-16 victory in set one.  The Tigers scored six of the final seven points in the set.
 
* The second set was a lot closer than the first but the Tigers used two big runs late to hold off the Yellow Jackets.  Trailing 19-15, the Tigers scored four straight points to tie the set.  AIC responded with the next three points before Holy Family ended the set scoring seven of the final nine points to take a 2-0 lead.
 
* AIC avoided getting swept with a 26-24 victory in set three. The Tigers responded with a 25-20 victory in the fourth set to take the match.  Holy Family never trailed in the set and led by as many as six points.  The Tigers tallied 12 kills in the set but took advantage of 10 attack errors by the Yellow Jackets.
 
How It Happened (vs. Merrimack)
 
* Holy Family led nearly the entire match as the Tigers picked apart the Warriors in three sets.  The Tigers largest deficit in the match came in the second set when Holy Family trailed 4-2 and 5-3. 
 
* The Tigers made a season-low 14 errors on the attack for a three-set match.  They also recorded a.269 hitting percentage; second-best on the season for a three-set match. 
 
News and Notes
 
* Senior Chase Wassel (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) recorded a season-high 27 kills versus AIC to go along with a season-best 19 digs.  She followed that up with 16 more kills against the Warriors to finish the day with 6.14 kills per set.
 
* Freshman Morgan Silks (Norristown, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll) paced the offense with 48 assists versus AIC and 41 against the Warriors.  Silks is now averaging 11.59 assists per set; tops in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC).
 
* Junior Gianna Pesognelli (Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle) tied her season-high with four blocks against the Yellow Jackets.  She also totaled 12 kills in the opening match.
 
* Junior Jillian Boyle (North Andover, Mass./North Andover (Rivier College)) led the Tigers in digs in both matches.  She totaled 23 digs in the opener versus AIC and then totaled 15 against the Warriors.
 
* Sophomore Carly Covington (Delmar, Md./Delmar) established a career-high 21 digs versus the Yellow Jackets. 
 
All-Time Series
Holy Family ended a three-match losing streak to American International.  The Tigers are now 2-3 versus the Yellow Jackets.  On the other side, the Tigers extended their winning streak versus Merrimack to four matches.  Holy Family is now 4-1 all-time versus the Warriors.
 
Next Up
Holy Family will wrap up the Wildcat Regional Tournament on Saturday with two more non-conference matches.  The Tigers will face Franklin Pierce University (12 p.m.) and Southern Connecticut State University (4 p.m.)
