Tigers Claim South Division Title With Win Over Lightning



Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University women's volleyball team claimed the regular season title after defeating Goldey-Beacom College by the score of 3-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action on Wednesday night inside the Campus Center Gymnasium on Senior Night.

How It Happened
 
* The Tigers made quick work of the Lightning winning the first two sets by the scores of 25-11 and 25-13.  Goldey-Beacom made things interesting in the third set but Holy Family escaped with a 25-23 victory to complete the shutout.
 
* Holy Family took advantage of 21 attack errors by the Goldey-Beacom offense. The Tigers held the Lightning to -.024 hitting percentage; the third time this season the team limited an opponent to negative percentage on the attack.
 
* Holy Family, who leads NCAA Division II in service aces, totaled 11 on the night increasing its season total to 247. 
 
* The Tigers recorded 34 kills in the match compared to only 19 by the Lightning.
 
News and Notes
 
* Senior Chase Wassel (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) led the team with 12 kills as she surpassed 500 kills for the season.  She now has 511 kills on the year; 14 shy of her career-high set in 2016.
 
* Senior Jaime Bonner (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) and junior Gianna Pesognelli (Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle) each finished with nine kills.  Pesognelli was a near perfect on the attack as she converted nine of 10 attempts for kills.
 
* Junior Jillian Boyle (North Andover, Mass./North Andover (Rivier College)) led the match with 12 digs.
 
* Freshmen Morgan Silks (Norristown, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll) and Courtney Heaney (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) paced the offense with a combined 33 assists.  Silks finished with 21, while Heaney recorded a season-high 12 assists.
 
Senior Recognition
Prior to the match the Tigers recognize its senior class in part of Senior Night Festivities at th Campus Center.  This year's class includes Bonner, Emma Patterson (Elk Township, N.J./Gloucester County Inst. of Technology), Candyce Riley (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and Wassel.
 
Continue to Cruise
Tonight's win extended the team's program record winning streak to 17 matches.  The victory also tied the program's record for most wins in a season with the 2011 squad.  That year the Tigers finished 25-11 and advanced all the way to the CACC Championship Final.
 
Regionally Ranked
The NCAA announced the second week of regional rankings earlier this afternoon.  Despite winning both its matches last week, the Holy Family dropped to fifth in the East Region. 
 
Regular Season Champions
Holy Family claimed the 2018 South Division Regular Season Title with its win tonight over the Lightning.  The team also officially clinched the number one seed in the upcoming CACC Tournament out of the South Division. It's the programs third South Division Title and first since 2011.
 
All-Time Results
Tonight marked the 32nd meeting between Holy Family and Goldey-Beacom since the start of the 2003 season.  The Tigers are now 24-8 and as a result extended their winning streak versus the Lightning to 24 matches.
 
Next Up
Holy Family will wrap up the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 3 as the Tigers travel to face Post University in a CACC contest.  Match time is set for 2 p.m.
