Tigers Shutout Spartans in Home Opener



Philadelphia, Pa. - Junior Matt Tracey (Jenkintown, Pa./Abington) scored a pair of goals to help lead the Holy Family University men's soccer team to a 4-0 victory over visiting Saint Thomas Aquinas College in a non-conference contest on Monday afternoon at Tiger Field.

How It Happened
* Holy Family scored the game's first goal on just its second shot of the game when Tracey connected on his first score of the season in the 18th minute. 
 
* With the half winding down the Tigers doubled their lead with a goal in the 44th minute.  Freshman Sean McCormick (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) scored his first collegiate goal making the score 2-0 in favor of the home squad.
 
* Tracey struck again for his second goal of the game in the 70th minute to extend the Tigers' lead to 3-0.  Senior Jovan James (Elgin Town, Jamaica) assisted on the play for his first point of the season.
 
* Freshman Mike Smith (Southampton, Pa./Archbishop Wood) got in on the scoring late in the game.  In the 87th minute, Smith connected on his first collegiate goal to cap the scoring with freshman Christian Escobar-Delgado (Philadelphia, Pa. (Columbia)/Northeast) assisted on the score.
 
Inside the Box Score
Saint Thomas Aquinas may have outshot Holy Family by a 21-9 margin for the game, but the Spartans only managed five shots on-goal… Junior goalkeeper Mark Pohl (Feasterville, Pa./Father Judge) stopped all five shots on target to preserve his first collegiate shutout victory… The Tigers had five of their nine total shots on-goal for the game.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 10th meeting all-time between Holy Family and Saint Thomas Aquinas dating back to the 1997 season.  With the victory the Tigers snap a five-game winless streak versus the Spartans and their first win since 2005.  Holy Family now holds an edge in the series at 5-4-1.
 
Next Up
Holy Family returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 9 as the Tigers open Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play on the road at Bloomfield College.  Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
