Tigers Take Down Knights in Season Opener



Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University women's soccer team came up big in its season opener as the Tigers defeated visiting Queens College, 3-1, in a non-conference contest on Thursday afternoon at Tiger Field.

How It Happened
- In the 14th minute Queens nearly came away with the first goal of the game but a shot by Erin Vernillo hit off the cross bar.
 
- Redshirt junior Stefanie Ulmer (Philadelphia, Pa./Delaware Valley HS Center City) scored the games first goal off a header shot in the 20th minute after receiving a cross-pass from freshman Hannah Derby (Pitman, N.J./Pitman) to give the Tigers a 1-0 advantage.
 
- :35 seconds after the Holy Family score, Queens came through with the equalizing goal as Guro Eriksen scored the Knights lone goal of the game.
 
- In the 30th minute Holy Family broke the 1-1 deadlock as Derby connected on her first collegiate goal after finding the upper left part of the net from a shot from the right side.  Junior Brianna Rock (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) assisted on the play.
 
- Queens threatened in the 44th minute with back-to-back shots.  Freshman goalkeeper Emily Camp (Arthur P. Schalick/) made the initial save on Adriana Mendrinos' shot and then stopped the rebounded shot by Guro to preserve the 2-1 lead heading into halftime.
 
- Holy Family tacked on an insurance goal in the 71st minute when freshman Cailey Plath (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower) scored her first collegiate goal to make the score 3-1.  Rock picked up her second assist of the game.
 
Inside the Box Score
Holy Family had three different players score goals in the opener… Rock tallied a pair of assists in the win… Camp, making her debut in net for the Tigers, finished with an impressive 10 saves after facing 20 total shots by the Knights.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the fifth meting all-time between Holy Family and Queens dating back to the 2008 season.  With the win the Tigers are now 4-1-0 versus the Knights, including winning the last four match ups.
 
Next Up
Holy Family returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 2 as the Tigers travel to face Lincoln University in a non-conference contest.  Game time is set for 12 p.m.
