Tigers Drop Season Opener to Nationally Ranked Falcons



Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University women's basketball team dropped its season opener to nationally ranked No. 6 Bentley University by the score of 71-58 on Friday evening inside the Campus Center Gymnasium.

How It Happened
 
* Bentley outscored Holy Family, 47-33, in the second half to counter the Tigers' 25-24 halftime lead.  The Falcons shot over 50-percent from the field in the final 20 minutes and knocked down 7-of-14 from beyond the arc. 
 
* Holy Family led by as many as eight points entering the third quarter on a 7-0 run.  A pair of free throws by redshirt senior Alexis Hofstaedter gave the Tigers a 32-31 advantage less than two minutes into the quarter.
 
* Bentley eventually tied the game at 37-37 midway through the third quarter and grabbed the lead for good when Lauren Green drained a three-pointer that made the score 40-37.  The Falcons held the game's first double-digit lead early in the fourth quarter when Maddy Springfield scored on a layup to increase the lead to 56-46.  Bentley's biggest lead came when Macchi Smith knocked down a three that made the score, 62-48, with 5:41 to play in regulation.

Holy Family: As a team the Tigers shot 42.0-percent from the field… Freshman Jada Smith recorded a double-double in her collegiate debut finishing with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting to go along with 11 rebounds… She was just as good defensively as she totaled three blocks and two steals… Junior Casey Thomas came away with eight points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Casey Schweitzer and Hofstaedter each added seven points.
 
Bentley: Freshman Marissa Fontaine scored a game-high 18 points in her collegiate debut, while Green added 17 points to lead the Falcons' offense… Fontaine and Green each knocked down three three-pointers in the game to account for six of the team's 10 deep range baskets… Springfield grabbed a team-best 10 rebounds to go along with four points and four assists.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 13th meeting all-time between Holy Family and Bentley dating back to the 2006-2007 season.  The Tigers are now 2-11 versus the Falcons in the series.
 
Next Up
Holy Family returns to action on Saturday as the Tigers host Franklin Pierce University in a non-conference contest. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
