Tigers Clinch Postseason Berth With Win at City Rival Chestnut Hill



Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University women's volleyball team officially clinched a spot in next month's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament after defeating city rival Chestnut Hill College, 3-1, in a conference match on Saturday afternoon at Sorgenti Arena. It marks the Tigers fifth straight postseason appearance and 10th in the last 11 years.

How It Happened
 
* Holy Family recorded a season-high 64 kills, one shy of the program record, on its way to the 3-1 victory over Chestnut Hill.  Four players recorded double-digit kills in the match. The team also set a season-high with 95 digs on defense as four players also totaled double-digit digs.
 
* After dropping the first set, 26-24, Holy Family bounced back in the second set.  With the set tied 17-17 the Tigers scored the next eight points to tie the match with a 25-17 victory.  Six of the team's eight points during that span came off the kill.
 
* The Tigers went on to win a back-and-forth third set (25-23) and then cruised to a 25-15 victory in the fourth set after opening with a 16-4 run.

Holy Family: Junior Chase Wassel (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) led a quartet of Tigers' that recorded double-digit kills in the match… Wassel totaled 17 kills to go along with a career-high 29 digs… In the process she surpassed 1,000 digs in her career… Sophomore Gianna Pesognelli (Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle) totaled a career-high 16 kills while leading the team with a .448 attack percentage… Pesognelli also led the team with two solo blocks and three block assists… Freshman Carly Covington (Delmar, Md./Delmar) came through with 14 kills and 15 digs, while junior Jaime Bonner (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) connected on 12 kills… Junior Natalie Stewart (York, Pa./York Catholic) hit the 50 assist mark for the second time this month as she set a career-high with 57 assists to go along with 11 digs… Sophomore Jillian Boyle (North Andover, Mass./North Andover (Rivier College)) finished the match with 23 digs.
 
Chestnut Hill: Corrine Kalala and Cassie Callahan each recorded eight kills for the Griffins to lead the team… Kennedy Sutton finished with 24 assists and eight digs, while Peyton Reno led the match with 37 digs.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 23rd meeting all-time between Holy Family and Chestnut Hill dating back to the 2007 season.  The Tigers are now 22-1 versus the Griffins after sweeping the season series and have won eight straight matches over their city rival.
 
Career Milestone
Wassel became just the third player in program history to surpass 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in a career. With her career-high 29 digs in today's match, Wassel now has 1,024 career digs to go along with her 1,240 career kills.  Former standouts Jennifer O'Connor (2005-08) and Rachel Johnson (2012-15) also achieved 1,000 kills and digs in their respective careers.
 
Streaking Tigers
Holy Family has won seven straight matches marking their longest winning streak since the 2011 season when the Tigers had win streaks of eight and seven during the course of the season.
 
Postseason Picture
Holy Family has officially clinched a postseason berth after today's victory. The Tigers are currently second in the CACC South Division.  With four matches remaining and a three match lead over Goldey-Beacom College and Georgian Court University, the Tigers are in the driver's seat to clinch a quarterfinal home match in the upcoming week.  The Lightning and Lions are both 9-6. Jefferson leads the division with a 14-1 record.
 
Next Up
Holy Family returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 31 as the Tigers travel to face Georgian Court University in a CACC contest.  Match time is set for 6 p.m. in Lakewood, N.J.
