Tigers Over Power Lightning in Home Opener



Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University women's volleyball team put on a show on show for the home crowd in its home opener as the Tigers defeated Goldey-Beacom College by the score of 3-0 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest on Friday night inside the Campus Center Gymnasium.

How It Happened
Holy Family controlled all aspects of the match and took advantage of a very efficient team serving.  The Tigers recorded 13 aces in the match to set a new season-high.  Holy Family also held the edge in kills (42-28), digs (44-31), assists (38-25) and attack percentage (.280 - .186). 
 
Holy Family opened the first set with a 5-1 run and never looked back. The Lightning came within one point of the Tigers just once in the set (6-5) but Holy Family scored four straight points to pull ahead even further. Holy Family led by as many as seven points when back-to-back kills by sophomores Kailyn McNamee (Wayne, Pa./Upper Merion) and Chase Wassel (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) made the score 17-10.  The Tigers went on to take the first set by the score of 25-19. 
 
The second set turned into a back-and-forth battle that went the distance and some.  Goldey-Beacom held the largest lead of the set when the Lightning took a 19-16 lead after a Holy Family attack error. However, Holy Family racked up five straight points to take a 21-19 lead capped by a kill from freshman Gianna Pesognelli (Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle).  The Lightning would go on to grab the lead back and held a 26-25 advantage but once again the Tigers bounced back and followed with three straight points to end the set with a 28-26 victory. 
 
Holy Family took the momentum of a 2-0 match lead into the third set by opening with an 8-2 run.  Holy Family limited Goldey-Beacom to just four kills in the set and only 25 total attacks.  As a team, the Tigers collected 13 kills in the final set and committed just five errors. Wassel totaled seven of her match-high 16 kills in the set, while as a team the Tigers recorded six service aces. Holy Family won the set by the score of 25-13.

Holy Family: Wassel led the team with 16 kills while recorded nine digs on defense.  She also came away with three service aces.  Pesognelli finished with eight kills and three total blocks (1BS/2BA), while sophomore Candyce Riley (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) totaled seven kills and nine digs. Junior Kacie Brien (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Township) paced the offense with assists to go along with four digs.  McNamee led the team with four aces, while sophomore Kelly Bergen (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) led the defense with 12 digs.
 
Goldey-Beacom: Grace McCarthy was the lone Lightning player to record double-digits with 10 kills and 10 digs.  Lindsay Przywara finished with eight kills and seven digs, while Olivia Florence totaled 20 assists.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight's match marked the 27th meeting all-time between Holy Family and Goldey-Beacom.  With the victory the Tigers extended their winning streak to 19 matches versus the Lightning.  Holy Family is now 19-8 all-time in the series.
 
Next Up
Holy Family returns to action on Saturday as the Tigers travel to face Concordia College in a CACC contest. Match time is slated for 1 p.m. in Bronxville, N.Y.
