Tigers Split on Final Day of Wildcat Regional Invitational



Newark, Del. - The Holy Family University women's volleyball team split a pair of non-conference matches on the final day of the Wildcat Regional Invitational hosted by Wilmington University on Saturday at the WU Athletics Complex.  The Tigers began the day with a 3-0 victory over Pace University before dropping their final match of the two-day tournament by the same score to American International College.
 
Holy Family 3, Pace 0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-22)
Holy Family made quick work of the Setters with a three-set victory.  The Tigers set the tone in the first set with a 25-16 victory. Holy Family opened with four straight points and would go on to lead by as many as eight points on two occasions.  The later coming when sophomore Chase Wassel (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) recorded a kill to make the score 19-11.  Four straight points by Pace followed and turned it into a four-point advantage but the Tigers held off the rally and scored five of the next six points to pick up the win. 
 
In the second set a late surge propelled Holy Family to victory as the Tigers went on a 5-0 run after Pace tied the set at 18-18.  The Setters cut the score down to 24-22 but a kill by Wassel sealed the second set, 25-22.  Pace come out firing to start the third set scoring seven unanswered points after Holy Family tallied the first point of the set.  Trailing 9-2 early on, Holy Family responded with a 6-0 run to come within one point of the lead at 9-8.  Four straight errors by the Setters capped with a service ace by junior Kacie Brien (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Township) and a kill by sophomore Kailyn McNamee (Wayne, Pa./Upper Merion) fueled the rally. 
 
Later in the set, the Tigers grabbed the lead for the first time since leading 1-0, this time for good.  A bad set gave the Tigers the lead and was followed by back-to-back kills by freshman Gianna Pesognelli (Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle) to make the score 15-12.  Pace nearly regained the lead when the score turned 19-18 but Holy Family quickly tacked on three straight points before clinching the match with a 25-22 victory.
 
Wassel led the team with 16 kills to go along with 10 digs and two block assists, while Pesognelli contributed 11 kills and two block assists of her own.  Sophomore Jaime Bonner (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) totaled seven kills on offense.  Sophomores Candyce Riley (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and Kelly Bergen (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) each picked up 12 digs on defense.  Riley also led the team with three service aces.  Brien totaled 29 assists while also recording 10 digs and two aces.
 
For Pace, Claudia Fontanet led the team with 10 kills.  Samantha Marquez totaled 11 digs, while Danielle Vaiano finished with 10 digs. 
 
American International College 3, Holy Family 1 (18-25, 13-25, 19-25)
In the final match of the tournament for Holy Family the Tigers fell to American International in three sets.  The Yellow Jackets recorded 41 kills in the match and finished with a .316 attack percentage. 
 
Wassel led the team with eight kills and nine digs, while Riley totaled five kills and six digs.  Brien recorded 20 assists and had two block assists.  Bergen led the Tigers with 10 digs.
 
For American International, Lauren Pires finished with a match-high 11 kills, while Jana Potic added nine kills.  Dolores Kopren made 37 assists for the Yellow Jackets and Mercy Rivera led the match with 16 digs.
 
Next Up
Holy Family returns to action on Friday, Sept. 16 as the Tigers host Goldey-Beacom College in the team's home opener at the Campus Center Gymnasium.  It also marks the Tigers first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest of the season.  Match time is slated for 6 p.m.
