Tigers Drop Non-Conference Match Up at SCSU



New Haven, Conn. - The Holy Family University men's basketball team dropped a non-conference contest at Southern Connecticut State University by the score of 78-65 on Friday night inside the Moore Field House in New Haven, Conn.

How It Happened
A fast start by the Owls set the tone early as the home team mounted a double-digit lead by the midway point of the first half.  Holy Family scored the game's first two points before Southern Connecticut ripped off 10 straight points to propel itself to a  10-2 lead.
 
Southern Connecticut grabbed its first double-digit (24-13) lead of the game at the 9:42 mark of the half after a layup basket by Noah Miree.  The Owls went on to lead by as many as 14 points in the first stanza after a pair of free throws by Jerry Luckett, Jr. made the score 34-20.  Holy Family did cut the deficit down to single digits before the half came to an end as freshman Randy Bell (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek) made two free throws as time expired to cap a 7-2 run by the Tigers in the final two minutes of the half.
 
Holy Family would come as close as seven points of the Owls' lead early in the second half after back-to-back scores by junior Dyllon Hudson-Emory (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) that made the score 38-31.  However, Southern Connecticut quickly reestablished its double-digit lead.  The Owls grabbed another 14-point advantage at the 12:29 mark (50-36).  Despite the Tigers cutting the deficit to single digits five times in the final 10 minutes, they were unable to surpass the Owls.  Each time Southern Connecticut responded to regain its double-digit lead.

Holy Family: Hudson-Emory led all scorers with a game-high 25 points after shooting 11-of-19 from the field… Bell came through with 16 points and one rebound shy of a double-double with nine boards.. Freshman Maliq Sanders (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) added 12 points and was also one board shy of a double-double as he grabbed nine boards on the night…Freshman Manny Casie (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) scored a season-high six points.
 
Southern Connecticut: Isaiah McLeod and Luckett, Jr. each recorded a double-double for the Owls…McLeod scored a team-high 23 points to go along with 10 rebounds, while Luckett, Jr. produced 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds… Michael Mallory finished with 20 points, five rebounds and a game-high seven assists.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the second time this season that Holy Family and Southern Connecticut faced one another.  The Owls won both match ups and are now 2-1 all-time versus the Tigers.  Holy Family won the first meeting of the series last season, 90-70.
 
Next Up
Holy Family returns home to the Campus Center Gymnasium as the calendar switches over to the New Year.  The Tigers will host Nyack College on Wednesday, Jan. 4 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest.  Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
