Tigers Edged by Philadelphia in Regular Season Finale

Philadelphia, Pa. - Sophomore Chase Wassel (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) recorded a match-high 22 kills and in the process surpassed 500 kills for the season but it wasn't enough as the Holy Family University women's volleyball team fell short to Philadelphia University, 3-2, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest on Saturday afternoon inside the Campus Center Gymnasium.  Prior to the match, Holy Family recognized its lone senior, Katelyn Scherber (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park), with a pre-match ceremony.

How It Happened
In a back-and-forth match from the very beginning it was only fitting that the match went the distance.  Holy Family took set one and three while Philadelphia came away with victories in sets two and four to force a fifth and decisive set.

Like the previous four sets, both teams exchanged leads multiple times throughout the set.  The Rams opened with back-to-back points before the Tigers ripped off three consecutive points.  Both teams would exchange points as the lead changed hands nine times by the time Holy Family grabbed a 12-11 led.

However, Philadelphia rallied for four straight points to pull of the victory.  Courtney Wensel tied the set with a kill and then gave the Rams the lead with an ace. After a setting error by the Tigers, Wensel capped the scoring with her 15th kill of the match to give the Rams the 15-12 triumph.

Inside the Box Score
Holy Family: Wassel led the Tigers with a match-high 22 kills while recording a .283 attack percentage.  She also finished with 10 digs and two aces.  Sophomore Jaime Bonner (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) finished one kill shy of double-figures with nine to go along with three total blocks (1BS/2BA).  Freshman Gianna Pesognelli (Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle) added eight kills with a .217 attack percentage while recording three blocks (1BS/2BA).  Junior Cecilia Weir (Warminster, Pa./William Tennant) led the team with 16 digs, while junior Kacie Brien (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Township) totaled 37 assists and 12 digs. Scherber totaled nine digs and led the Tigers with three aces.

Philadelphia: Wensel and Mariah Cadzow each totaled 15 kills to lead the Rams' attack.  Wensel also finished the match with a team-high 12 digs and four aces.  Lauren Laucella added seven kills and nine digs, while Emily Pilla finished the day with 10 digs and three aces. Alexandra Harrington totaled a match-high 40 assists to go along with seven digs, four aces and three kills.  As a team, Philadelphia recorded 15 aces.

Elite Company
With her 22 kills, Wassel became just the third player in program history to record 500-plus kills in a single season.  In 2007 both Lauren Gosnell and Jennifer O'Conner surpassed 500 as the duo combined for 1,044 kills that season.  Gosnell holds the single-season record with 537, while O'Conner now shares second all-time with Wassel with 507 kills.

Next Stop, Postseason
With the regular season in books, the Tigers will now shift gears to next week's CACC Tournament.  Holy Family finished tied for third place in the South Division with Chestnut Hill College at 11-8, but due to the two regular season victories over the Griffins, the Tigers will be seeded third out of the south.  As a result, Holy Family will travel to face the second seed from the North Division, Bloomfield College, on Tuesday for a CACC quarterfinal match up with the Bears.

Next Up
Holy Family is back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 15 as the Tigers travel to face Bloomfield College in the CACC quarterfinals.  Match time is slated for 7 p.m.
