Tigers Edged by Devils in Five Sets

Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University women's volleyball team nearly completed a come-from-behind victory at the University of the Sciences, but the Devils managed to hold off the Tigers by the score of 3-2 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest on Wednesday night.

How it Happened
Holy Family dropped the first two sets (25-22 and 25-18) to start the match in a 2-0 deficit. However, the Tigers came clawing back beginning with the third set. The Tigers found themselves down 18-10 late in the set but began chipping away at the Devils lead. With junior Cecilia Weir (Warminster, Pa./William Tennant) controlling the serve, the Tigers rolled off nine straight points and grabbed a 22-20 lead. After a kill by the Devils, the Tigers responded with three unanswered points, including a pair of kills from sophomore Kailyn McNamee (Wayne, Pa./Upper Merion) to grab the victory, 25-21.

The momentum carried on into the fourth set as Holy Family scored the first six points and then went on to lead 11-1 to start the set. The Tigers allowed a season-low eight points in the set to the Devils and tied the match at 2-2 with a 25-8 triumph.

In the fifth and decisive set, USciences bounced back and opened with an 8-3 run. The Tigers managed to cut the lead down to three points on a few occasions but were unable to catch the Devils. USciences took the match with a 15-11 victory.

Holy Family: Three Tigers finished the night with double-figures in kills, including sophomore Chase Wassel (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) who led the match with 18 kills and 24 digs. Sophomore Jaime Bonner (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) tallied 12 kills and three block assists, while freshman Gianna Pesognelli (Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle) finished with 13 kills, three block assists and two service aces. Sophomore Candyce Riley (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) paced the offense with 43 assists while recording 11 digs on defense. Weir and sophomore Kelly Bergen (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) each totaled 13 digs in the match.

USciences: Brooke Witmer and Simran Sangu each totaled nine kills to lead the Devils' offense. Elizabeth Checca added eight kills and nine digs, while Cassandra Moy led the team with 19 digs. Dakota Raymond and Christine Irerra each totaled 16 digs.

Tonight marked the 28^th meeting all-time between Holy Family and USciences dating back to 2003. The Tigers are now 15-13 versus the Devils all-time.
