Tigers Split on Final Day of Ram Fest Tournament



West Chester, Pa. - The Holy Family University women's volleyball team split a pair of non-conference contests on the final day of the Ram Fest Tournament hosted by West Chester University on Saturday inside Hollinger Field House.
 
Holy Family began the day with a 3-0 victory over Bowie State as the Tigers won by the scores of 25-17, 25-9 and 25-17.  Later in the evening the Tigers dropped their match to host West Chester by the score of 3-0 falling in straight sets by the scores of 15-25, 19-25 and 15-25.

In their first match of the day, the Tigers made quick work of Bowie State.  Holy Family used an 11-4 run to close out the first set and set the tone for the match.  With the set tied 14-14 the Tigers scored their next four points all on kills to help propel them to the first set victory.
 
In the second set, the Tigers opened with a 6-1 lead and never looked back.  Holy Family led by as many as 13 points late in the set holding a 20-7 advantage.  The Tigers closed out the second set on a 5-2 run. 
 
Finally, in the third set, the Tigers pulled away late after Bowie State tied the set at 11-11. Holy Family scored the next five points and never relinquished the lead as they closed out the match with a 25-17 victory in set three.
 
Freshman Chase Wassel (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) led the Tigers' attack with 12 kills to go along with 12 digs on the defensive end.  Senior Emma Herring (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) added seven kills, while junior Katelyn Scherber (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) added six kills and four digs.  Freshman Candyce Riley (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) led the team with 13 digs, while freshman Natalie Stewart (York, Pa./York Catholic) paced the offense with 22 assists.
 
West Chester 3, Holy Family 0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-15)
 
Holy Family couldn't seem to get on track against West Chester as the Golden Rams pulled away from the Tigers in each of the three sets.  West Chester managed to go on scoring runs in all three sets to claim victory.
 
Wassel once again led the Tigers in kills as she finished with six.  She also totaled eight digs.  Scherber added five kills, while Herring and redshirt junior Erin Miller (Chandler, Ariz. /Corona del sol) each totaled four kills and two block assists.  Riley led the team with 12 digs. 
 
For West Chester, Molly Grammer totaled a match-high 13 kills, while Marina Sharkey finished with eight kills and four digs.  Callie Krajcir finished with 14 digs on defense. 
 
Holy Family is back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 8 for the team's home opener.  This time, the Tigers will host West Chester in a non-conference contest inside the Campus Center Gymnasium.  Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
