Tigers Fall Short as Bears Win CACC Opener



Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University women's volleyball team and Bloomfield College went the distance in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest on Tuesday night inside the Campus Center Gymnasium.  The Bears came away with a 3-2 victory in the conference opener winning the match by the scores of 18-25, 25-17, 16-25, 25-20 and 15-11.
 
Holy Family is now 1-8 overall and 0-1 in the CACC, while Bloomfield improves to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in conference action. 
 
The Holy Family attack overwhelmed the Bears as the Tigers produced a season-high 53 kills with four players producing double-figures.  Freshman Chase Wassel (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) recorded a season-high 15 kills to lead the team and tie for the match high.  She also finished with 18 digs on defense.
 
Senior Rachel Johnson (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way West) capped the night with 12 kills to go along with six digs.  Johnson is now in striking distance of becoming the fourth player in program history to reach 1,000 kills for her career.  She'll enter the next game two shy as she currently has 998 career kills.
 
Junior Katelyn Scherber (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) finished with ten kills and three digs, while redshirt-junior Erin Miller (Chandler, Ariz. /Corona del sol) totaled ten kills and four block assists.  Freshman Candyce Riley (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) totaled set a new season-high with 30 digs, while freshman Kelly Bergen (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) recorded 13 digs. 
 
Freshman Natalie Stewart (York, Pa./York Catholic) also set a season-high with a match-high 45 set assists.  Stewart finished the match with three service aces and nine digs.
 
For Bloomfield, Diannmarie Rivera led the team with 15 kills to go along with five block assists and nine digs.  Valerie Bermudez finished with nine kills and a team-best 27 digs, while Samantha Rios totaled 26 digs.
 
Holy Family edged the Bears 53-39 in kills and also had the advantage in digs for the match, 85-76. 
 
Holy Family is back in action on Thursday, Sept. 17 as the Tigers host Georgian Court University in a CACC contest.  Match time is slated for 7 p.m.
