Newark, Del. - The Holy Family University women's volleyball team dropped its final matches on the last day of the Wildcats Regional Invitational hosted by Wilmington University on Saturday at the WU Athletics Complex. The Tigers fell to American International (19-25, 20-25, 26-24, 16-25) by the score of 3-1 and were shutout by Franklin Pierce University (18-25, 12-25, 15-25), 3-0.
American Int'l 3, Holy Family 1 The Tigers found themselves down 2-0 early in the match versus American International. The Yellow Jackets won the first two sets by the score of 25-19 and 25-20 before the Tigers rallied to take set three.
Holy Family trailed early in the set as American Int'l opened with a 5-0 run. The Tigers would go on to tie the score at 10-10 before going on an 8-2 surge to take an 18-12 lead after freshman
Natalie Stewart (York, Pa./York Catholic) tallied a kill.
The Tigers led the rest of the set up until the Yellow Jackets tied the score at 24-24. However, a kill by freshman
Chase Wassel (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) broke the deadlock and then the Tigers clinched the set after a Yellow Jacket attack error made the score 26-24.
Despite the comeback in set three by the Tigers, the Yellow Jackets went on to win the match after taking set four by the score of 25-16.
Wassel led the Tigers with a season-high 14 kills to go along with a team-best 15 digs. Senior
Rachel Johnson (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way West) tallied a season-high 13 kills, while redshirt junior
Erin Miller (Chandler, Ariz. /Corona del sol) totaled seven kills and three total blocks. Freshman
Candyce Riley (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) recorded 14 digs on defense and freshman
Natalie Stewart (York, Pa./York Catholic) totaled a season-best 36 set assists to go along with seven digs and two block assists.
For American Int'l, Natlija Dordevic totaled a match-high 22 kills and recorded an attack percentage of .362 to lead the offense. Mercy Rivera finished with a match-high 22 digs, while Amanda Encinas recorded a high 46 set assists. Bailey Swan recorded a double-double with 15 kills and 12 digs.
Franklin Pierce 3, Holy Family 0 Holy Family concluded the tournament with a 3-0 setback versus Franklin Pierce. The Ravens won the match in straight sets by the score of 25-18, 25-12 and 25-15.
Johnson and Miller each led the Tigers with six kills apiece as Johnson also totaled nine digs. Riley recorded double-digit digs with 12 to go along with four kills. Wassel finished the match with eight kills and five digs.
Aiden Garcia and Abigail Sonuga totaled nine and eight kills respectively for the Ravens. Katie Leidhold and Madison Klusendorf each finished with seven kills. Leidhold also led the team with 14 digs. In addition, Sarah MacHugh also finished with 14 digs, while Brittney Carias added 12 digs.
Holy Family is back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 15 as the Tigers host Bloomfield College in the first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest of the season. Match time is slated for 7 p.m. inside the Campus Center Gymnasium.
