Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University softball team split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader at Chestnut Hill College on Thursday afternoon at the Chestnut Hill Softball Field. The Griffins took game one by the score of 1-0, while the Tigers earned the win in game two with an 8-1 victory.
Â
Holy Family is now 6-4 overall and in conference play, while Chestnut Hill is 4-14 overall and 2-8 in the CACC.Â
Â
Freshman
Taylor Favinger (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester County Inst. of Tech.) continued her hot hitting from yesterday as she finished the afternoon 3-for-5 at the plate to go along with two doubles and her second home run of the season. Junior
Kristine Casey (Newark, Del./Caravel) finished 2-for-7 on the afternoon with a double and a triple, while freshman
Koreen Orozco (Whittier, Calif./St. Paul) went 2-for-6 with one RBI.Â
Â
Game One: Chestnut Hill 1, Holy Family 0Â
Senior Courtney Dayter (2-5) had her best outing of the season as she silenced the Holy Family bats in the opener. Dayter scattered two hits in a complete seven-inning game to go along with a pair of strikeouts.Â
Â
Chestnut Hill scored the game's lone run in the bottom of the fifth inning. With the bases loaded and two outs in the inning, freshman Koraima Dudley drew a five-pitch walk to give the Griffins a 1-0 lead.
Â
Freshman
Morgan Maida (Eatonville, Wash./Eatonville) (0-2) pitched just as impressive as she scattered three hits through 4.2 innings in her first collegiate start. Maida also struck out five batters and walked four.Â
Â
Orozco came in as relief as she finished the final 1.1 innings for the Tigers. Orozco struck out three of the four batters she faced. She also had one of the Tigers' two hits with Casey recording the other.
Â
Game Two: Holy Family 8, Chestnut Hill 1Â
In game two the Tigers' bats came to life as they exploded for eight runs in the nightcap. The Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead when Favinger hit a two-run home run over the left-center field fence in the third inning.Â
Â
Chestnut Hill got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning after sophomore Ashleigh Sharp recorded a run scoring triple to make the score 2-1.Â
Â
That would be the only blemish for Orozco who was making the start for the Tigers. Orozco improved to 4-1 after going the distance. She struck out four batters and scattered three hits in seven innings of work.
Â
Leading 2-1 entering the seventh inning, the Tigers put the game away with a six run inning. Holy Family drove in all six runs with two outs in the inning. Sophomore
Brianna Scotto (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) highlighted the inning with a two run single. Favinger recorded a run scoring double, while Orozco and Casey each drove in a run each.Â
Â
Holy Family is back in action on Saturday, April 4 as the Tigers travel to face Post University in a CACC doubleheader. Game one is slated for 1 p.m.
