Tigers Fall to Wilmington in CACC Semifinals



Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University men's basketball team's quest for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) championship came to an end on Friday night as the Tigers were defeated by Wilmington University by the score of 75-71 in the semifinals at Philadelphia University's Gallagher Athletic Center.
 
Holy Family, seeded second from the South Division is now 22-8 overall, while Wilmington, seeded fourth from the South, improves to 11-19 overall.  The Wildcats will now face third-seeded Philadelphia in the CACC Championship on Saturday night (7 p.m.).
 
The Tigers will now wait and see if they are one of the five teams that receive an at-large bid into the NCAA East Regional next week.  Holy Family entered the week ranked seventh in the region.
 
Redshirt junior Reggie Charles (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) led the Holy Family offense with a team-high 23 points.  Charles converted 9-of-12 from the free throw line and fell one assist shy of a double-double as he dished out nine assists to tie his season high.  Junior Isaiah Gans (Philadelphia, Pa./Redemption Christian Academy) finished with 16 points to go along with nine rebounds. 
 
Redshirt junior Eric Fleming (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) added eight points, while juniors Derrick Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa./Neumann-Goretti) and Marvin Crawford (Edison, N.J./J.P. Stevens) each added six points apiece.  Stewart also grabbed nine rebounds.
 
For Wilmington, sophomore Tyaire Ponzo-Meek led all scorers with a game-high 28 points after shooting 9-of-17 from the field and 8-of-9 from the free throw line.  Ponzo-Meek also dished out a team-high seven assists.  Senior Kevin Ohen recorded 12 points and a game high 12 rebounds to record a double-double.  Senior Rashaun Rasheed contributed ten points and six rebounds.
 
With two minutes remaining to play in the second half, the Tigers trailed by six points (65-59) until Fleming knocked down a three-pointer to bring the Tigers within three points of the lead.  On the team's next possession, junior Turhan Griffin (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin Learning Center) grabbed a key offensive rebound and was fouled in the process by senior Tyrik Gass. 
 
On top of the foul, Gass was called for a costly technical foul that gave the Tigers an additional two free throws and possession.  Griffin went on to convert both his free throws and then Charles came through and converted the two technical free throws to give the Tigers a 66-65 lead with 1:35 to play.
 
On the next Wilmington possession, Ponzo-Meek hit a jumper and then was fouled in the process.  He converted the free throw to give the Wildcats a 68-66 lead. 
 
Wilmington went on to increase its lead to seven points after converting 5-of-46 from the free throw line on its next three possessions.  With :26 seconds left on the clock the Wildcats held a 73-66 advantage. 
 
Holy Family followed with five straight points on its next two possessions capped by a three-pointer by redshirt junior Xavier Williams (Philadelphia, Pa./Saul) to make the score 73-71 with only two seconds showing on the clock.  The Tigers quickly fouled, but Ponzo-Meek connected on both free throws to give the Wildcats a 75-71 lead. 
 
With one final possession, the Tigers launched a desperation three-pointer but it fell short as time expired. 
 
Wilmington shot 42.6-percent from the field and held the Tigers to only 33.3-percent shooting.  The Tigers knocked down 12 three-pointers and were 15-of-21 from the free throw line.
