Tigers Fall to Felician in CACC Quarterfinals

Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University women's soccer team saw its season come to an end after suffering a 3-2 loss to Felician University in the quarter final round of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament on Tuesday afternoon at Tiger Field.

Holy Family, seeded second in the tournament, concludes the year with an 11-6-1 record.  The Tigers were appearing in their 17th straight conference tournament since joining the CACC in 1999.  Seventh-seeded Felician improves to 8-9-0 overall and will face No. 6 Philadelphia University in the semifinals.

Felician struck first in this one as the Golden Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute after senior Marissa Nieves found the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season.  Nieves received a cross pass from sophomore Danielle Stoll to set up the score.

The Golden Falcons held on to the one goal lead heading into halftime despite the Tigers pressuring the Felician defense with 11 shots in the half.  Senior goalkeeper Julia Sheridan finished the first half with five saves and went on to stop nine for the game.

Early in the second half, the Tigers responded with their first goal when freshman Brianna Rock (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) nailed a shot from inside the box towards the left side of the net.  Rock's goal in the 57th minute marked her fourth of the season as senior Jenna Richards (Croydon, Pa./Conwell Egan) recorded her team-leading eighth assist of the season.

Felician would go on to regain the lead after back-to-back goals in a three-minute span.  The first coming in the 66th minute when sophomore Amanda Nowak got off a wide-open shot that just missed the left corner post and found its way into the back of the net. It marked Nowak's team-leading eighth goal of the season.

In the 69th minute, Stoll tallied a goal of her own after forcing a turnover just outside the box.  She was able to get by the Holy Family defender and get off a wide-open shot for her seventh goal of the season.

Trailing 3-1, with less than ten minutes to play in regulation, the Tigers cut into the Golden Falcons' lead in the 84th minute thanks to a handball by Felician inside the box.  Junior Ashley Shackleford (Burlington, N.J./Holy Cross HS) converted the penalty kick for her sixth goal of the season.

The Holy Family offense continued to pressure Sheridan with three shots in the final five minutes. Freshman Erin Purack (Farmingdale, N.Y./Plainedge) sailed a shot on net with :43 seconds left on the clock in an attempt to tie the game.  The shot appeared to have beaten Sheridan, but she was able to corral the ball with a leaping save to preserve the lead.

Holy Family finished the game with 26 shots and controlled the corners by a 5-2 margin.
