Tigers Clinch Postseason Berth With Win at Chestnut Hill

Philadelphia, Pa. - It came down to the regular season finale and the Holy Family University women's volleyball team was up to the challenge as the Tigers came away with a 3-1 victory at Chestnut Hill College in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest on Thursday night at Sorgenti Arena.  The Tigers won the match by the scores of 16-25, 25-17, 25-16 and 26-24.

As a result, the Tigers clinched the final postseason spot in the South Division and will face the top seed out of the North Division, Post University, on Tuesday night in the CACC quarterfinals.  Holy Family improves to 12-18 overall and finishes conference action with an 11-8 mark.  Meanwhile, Chestnut Hill concludes its season at 11-21 overall and 10-9 in the CACC.

Senior Emma Herring (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) and freshman Chase Wassel (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) combined for 27 of the team's 53 kills on the night to lead the Tigers' attack.  Herring extended her streak to five straight matches with 10 or more kills with 13 as she recorded an attack percentage of .500 with one error on 24 attempts.

Wassel finished with 14 kills and a team-high 18 digs.  Senior Rachel Johnson (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way West) added nine kills and 13 digs, while redshirt junior Erin Miller (Chandler, Ariz. /Corona del sol) and freshman Jaime Bonner (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) each produced six kills.  Freshman Natalie Stewart (York, Pa./York Catholic) led the match with 36 assists to go along with four kills and 14 digs.

For Chestnut Hill, Rachel Biro and Emily Koehler each totaled 10 kills.  Biro finished with an attack percentage of .667 after not committing an error on 15 attempts.  She also led the match with six block assists.  Regina Trabosh led the match with 20 digs, while Kennedy Sutton and Alyssa Tamsing paced the offense with 17 assists apiece.  Sutton also totaled 11 digs on defense.

After dropping the first set, 25-16, Holy Family came soaring back with back-to-back victories in sets two and three.  The Tigers won in ease by the scores of 25-17 and 25-16 respectively.  In the fourth set, Chestnut Hill led 11-5 early on before the Tigers rallied to cut the score to 12-11.

The 6-1 run by the Tigers was highlighted by a pair of kills from Herring and four errors by Chestnut Hill.  The Griffins bounced back and increased their lead back up to 18-14, but once again Holy Family responded.

This time the Tigers used an 8-2 to take their first lead of the set when a kill by Johnson gave the team a 21-20 advantage.  The run was capped after an attack error by Biro made the score 22-20.

Chestnut Hill once again rallied and grabbed the lead right back with three straight points.  The Griffins would increase the lead to 24-23 and were on the verge of clinching the set.  The Tigers though had other ideas as Johnson tied the set with a kill before Bonner closed out the match with back-to-back kills to send Holy Family into the postseason.

As mentioned, Holy Family, the fourth seed out of the South Division, will face top-seeded Post from the North in the CACC quarterfinals on Tuesday, Nov. 17.  Match time is slated for 7 p.m. in Waterbury, Conn.  More information on the CACC Tournament will be available at a later time.
