Tigers Pick Up Victory at Felician, 3-1



Rutherford, N.J. - Senior Rachel Johnson (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way West) recorded a season-high 22 kills as the Holy Family University women's volleyball team defeated Felician College by the score of 3-1 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest on Saturday afternoon.  Holy Family won the match by the scores of 27-25, 23-25, 25-14 and 25-18.
 
Holy Family improves to 3-14 overall and 2-5 in the CACC, while Felician is now 3-14 overall and 1-5 in conference action.
 
Johnson's 22 kills also tied her career-high set last season as she led the Tigers' attack with an impressive .444 attack percentage.  She also totaled ten digs on defense.  Redshirt junior Erin Miller (Chandler, Ariz. /Corona del sol) and junior Katelyn Scherber (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) each totaled nine kills on the afternoon.
 
Miller added three block assists and two service aces, while Scherber added three service aces and ten digs.  Freshman Candyce Riley (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) set a new season-high with 31 digs to go along with six service aces.  Senior Emma Herring (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) totaled seven kills and two block assists, while freshman Jaime Bonner (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) finished with five kills and three block assists.
 
Sophomore Kacie Brien (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Township) paced the Tigers' offense with a career-high 43 assists to go along with 12 digs. 
 
For Felician, Carmen Shaw led the team with 15 kills, while Niccole Soriano finished with a team-best 20 digs.  Susie McKeever totaled 30 assists to go along with eight digs, while Paulina Calero added eight kills.
 
The first set featured seven lead changes and 12 ties throughout the set.  Despite the back-and-forth action, Holy Family grabbed the most important lead when the Tigers rallied for two straight points to close out the set.  A kill by Miller gave the Tigers the final lead of the set (26-25) and went on to win the set thanks to an attack error by the Golden Falcons.
 
After dropping the second set, the Tigers came back and took the third set in convincing fashion late.  Trailing 7-5, the Tigers produced five straight points to hold a 10-7 lead.  Holy Family maintained the lead the rest of the way as the Tigers capitalized off scoring ten of the final 11 points of the match.
 
Scherber recorded three straight aces to help the Tigers close out the set on a 6-0 run.  Holy Family finished the match with 14 aces. 
 
In the fourth and final set, the Tigers pulled away late to secure the victory.  Leading 14-11, the Tigers scored five straight points thanks to a pair of service aces by Riley and back-to-back kills by Johnson and Scherber. 
 
Holy Family closed out the match scoring five of the final seven points as Miller sealed the victory with a kill to win the set, 25-18.
 
Holy Family is back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 6 as the Tigers host Pace University in a non-conference contest.  Match time is slated for 7 p.m. inside the Campus Center Gymnasium.
