Tigers Fall to Pace in Non-Conference Match, 3-1

Philadelphia, Pa. - Senior Rachel Johnson (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way West) totaled a match-high 21 kills but it wasn't enough as the Holy Family University women's volleyball team dropped a non-conference match to visiting Pace University by the score of 3-1 on Tuesday night inside the Campus Center Gymnasium.  Pace won the match by the scores of 24-26, 25-19, 25-22 and 25-23.

Holy Family is now 3-15 overall, while Pace improves to 8-11 on the season.

For the second straight match, Johnson totaled 20-plus kills as she finished the match with 21; one shy of her career and season-high.  Johnson recorded an attack percentage of .354 and totaled nine digs to go along with four block assists.

Freshman Chase Wassel (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) finished with 11 kills to go along with 17 digs, while senior Emma Herring (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) totaled seven kills.  Herring also totaled four blocks (1BS/3BA).  Sophomore Kacie Brien (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Township) hit 40 assists for the second straight match while collecting six digs.

Freshman Jaime Bonner (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) added a season-high six kills and four digs, while freshman Candyce Riley (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) led the team with 23 digs.

For Pace, freshman Claudia Fontanet led the Setters with 19 kills to go along with eight digs.  Junior Samantha Marquez also tallied double-digit kills as she finished with 12 while adding a match-high 27 digs.  Freshman Mira Wallace led the match with 41 assists.

Holy Family came out firing in the first set scoring the first six points to take a commanding lead.  The Tigers led by as many as eight points after an attack error by Pace made the score 12-4.  As the set progressed, the Setters began chipping away at the Tigers lead and eventually tied the set at 18-18 after pulling out four straight points.

After both teams exchanged points, the Tigers scored three straight points after a kill and service ace by Johnson.  The Tigers extended the lead to 22-19 after an attack error by Pace.  The Setters rallied and took the lead for the first time in the set at 24-23.  However, Holy Family responded with three straight points to close out the match and win the set.  Wassel recorded back-to-back kills before the set was won on an attack error by Pace.

In the second set, Pace led majority of the way and took control early on.  However, a late surge by the Tigers brought them to within one point of the lead.  An attack error by Pace capped a 4-0 run to make the score 17-16.  However, Pace responded with four straight points to regain control and would go on to win the set, 25-19.

In the third set, Pace once again led majority of the way but the Tigers did have opportunities to overcome a few late deficits.  A kill by Bonner late in the set gave the Tigers an 18-17 lead; their first since leading  15-14. Three straight points by the Setters recaptured the lead for the visitors but the Tigers went on to tie the set a couple times, including at 22-22. Pace though finished with the final three points of the set to hold a 2-1 lead in the match.

In the fourth and final set, Pace overcame a 15-11 lead by the Tigers as both teams battled back-and-forth late.  The set featured five different lead changes and six ties once Pace tied the set, 16-16.  Holy Family held its last lead when after an attack error by Pace made the score 22-21.  On the ensuing play, the Setters tied the score and went on to take the lead scoring four of the final five points to win the set and secure the 3-1 victory.

Holy Family is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 10 as the Tigers host Caldwell University in a CACC contest. Match time is slated for 1 p.m.
