Tigers Knock Off Chargers; Advance to East Region Final



West Haven, Conn. - The Holy Family University women's volleyball team defeated top-seeded and host the University of New Haven by the score of 3-1 in the NCAA Division II East Region semifinals on Friday night to advance its first-ever regional final in program history.  The Tigers will face sixth-seeded American International College Saturday night in the regional championship.

How It Happened
 
* After dropping the first set, 25-10, to the defending East Region champions, Holy Family bounced back with a huge 25-20 victory in set two.  The Tigers recorded 20 kills in the second set as senior Chase Wassel (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) accounted for 12.  Holy Family led throughout the set until New Haven tied things up at 18-18.  With the set tied 22-22, Wassel took over and recorded three straight kills to win the set.
 
* In the third set the momentum carried over as Holy Family led 22-10.  New Haven though followed with a 7-0 run to make things interesting but the Tigers held off the rally and close out the set with three straight points. The Holy Family defense limited New Haven to just four kills in the third set.
 
* Holy Family closed out the match with a 25-18 victory in the fourth set.  Leading 20-16, the Tigers scored four unanswered points to set up match-point.  After two points by the Chargers, junior Gianna Pesognelli (Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle) made it official with the match's final kill sending the Tigers to the East Region finals.
 
News and Notes
 
* Wassel led the match with 24 kills; 12 of which came in the second set.  She also finished with a match-high 23 digs to go along with five aces.
 
* Junior Jillian Boyle (North Andover, Mass./North Andover (Rivier College)) registered 20 digs in the victory and as a result surpassed 1,000 digs in her Holy Family career.  The milestone dig came in the second set.  Boyle now has 1,014 digs in a Tigers uniform and 1,272 digs in her career.  She totaled 258 digs during her freshman season while at Rivier College.
 
* Pesognelli along with sophomore Carly Covington (Delmar, Md./Delmar) finished with double-digit kills.  Pesognelli totaled 14 kills, while Covington added 10 kills and 14 digs.
 
* Freshman Morgan Silks (Norristown, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll) led the match with 47 assists while totaling 16 digs on defense.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the fifth meeting between Holy Family and New Haven since the start of the 2009 season and first since 2013.  The Tigers are now 1-4 versus the Chargers in the all-time series.
 
Still Making History
With tonight's victory, Holy Family will be advancing to the program's first-ever regional final.  Furthermore, the Tigers are the first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) squad to win a semifinal match in the women's volleyball East Regional. 
 
Next Up
Holy Family is face sixth-seeded American International in the East Region Final on Saturday starting at 7 p.m.  The Yellow Jackets defeated second-seeded Adelphi University, 3-1, to advance to their third straight regional final.  The winner of tomorrow's final will advance to the NCAA Division II national quarterfinals.  The round of eight will begin Thursday, Nov. 29 at the A.J. Palumbo Center in Pittsburgh.
