Tigers Fall Short in CACC Semifinals Against Caldwell



Newark, Del. - The Holy Family University women's volleyball team saw its season come to an end after falling to Caldwell University, 3-1, in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) semifinals on Saturday afternoon at the Wilmington University Athletics Complex.

How It Happened
 
* Caldwell took the first two sets despite Holy Family recording 37 kills to the Cougars' 18.  Caldwell took advantage of 18 errors by the Tigers in the first two sets, while only committing two of its own.  Holy Family totaled 32 errors in the match.
 
* Holy Family bounced back in the third set with a victory.  Trailing 6-4 in the set, the Tigers scored eight of the next 10 points to build a 12-8 lead.  Holy Family would go on to lead by as many as nine points in the set (22-13) before going on to score the final three points in the set to win by double-digits (25-14).
 
* In the fourth set Caldwell opened with a 5-1 run and never looked back. The Cougars led the entire way despite the Tigers cutting the lead to two points at 9-7.  Caldwell rallied for six straight points to pull away from the Tigers and take the set in ease at 25-15.

Holy Family: Three Tigers recorded double-figure kills in the match… Junior Chase Wassel (North Wales, Pa., Lansdale Catholic) totaled a match-high 22 kills to go along with 13 digs… Freshman Carly Covington (Delmar, Md., Delmar) finished with 15 kills; one shy of her season-high, while setting a career-high with 20 digs… Sophomore Gianna Pesognelli (Phoenix, Ariz., Pinnacle) recorded 14 kills… Junior Natalie Stewart (York, Pa., York Catholic) recorded 53 assists marking the third time this season she totaled 50 or more assists in a match… Sophomore Jillian Boyle (North Andover, Mass., North Andover (Rivier College)) led the match with 25 digs, while junior Kailyn McNamee (Wayne, Pa., Upper Merion) finished with 15 digs.
 
Caldwell: Katrina Janssen led the Cougars with 12 digs while collecting 14 digs on defense… Taryn Auyong also recorded double-digit kills with 10 to go along with seven digs… Jessica Mitchell led the team with 16 digs… Kathleen Compagno finished with seven kills and totaled eight blocks, including seven block assists.

Today marked the 20th meeting all-time between Holy Family and Caldwell dating back to the 2007 season.  The Cougars are now 6-14 versus the Tigers in the series.  Caldwell is 3-0 versus Holy Family in the CACC Tournament.

Holy Family was making its 10th overall appearance in the CACC Tournament and fifth straight.  The Tigers are now 7-10 all-time in the postseason with appearances in the 2007, 2010 and 2011 championship finals.
 
20-plus Wins
Holy Family finished the season with 21 victories; the most since winning 25 matches in 2011.  The Tigers have won 20-plus matches four times in program history.
