Alumni Spotlight: Ryan Lancaster '08

9/29/2020 12:00:00 AM

During the fall semester we'll be highlighting Holy Family University alumni in a new feature called 'Alumni Spotlight.'  Today's edition we feature former men's basketball standout Ryan Lancaster '08.  Lancaster was a three-time All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) selection, capping his playing career with first team accolades in 2008.  The three-time All-CACC honoree was part of the first men's basketball team to earn a bid into the NCAA Division II tournament.  The Tigers received an at-large bid into the then 2008 Northeast Region Tournament (now the East Region) after advancing to the CACC Championship game versus city rival Philadelphia University (now Thomas Jefferson University).  The Tigers received the seventh seed in the Northeast Regional and took second-seeded Assumption College into overtime. Lancaster finished the game with 22 points.  During the 2007-08 campaign, Lancaster averaged 17.4 points per game and went on to finish his career with 1,636 points, which is currently sixth-best in program history.

* Alumni interested in taking part in our Alumni Spotlight feel free to reach out to Greg Pellegrino, Sports Information Director at gpellegrino@holyfamily.edu

Graduation Year: 2008

Degree: Business Management and Marketing

Athletic/Academic Accomplishments at HFU: 2005-2006 3rd team All-CACC, 2006-2007 2nd team All-CACC, 2007-2008 1st team All-CACC, Ranked 6th in career points at Holy Family with 1636.

Current Occupation: Regional Vice President

Since Holy Family I have… Played four years of professional basketball in European and South American leagues, and then transitioned into a career in the financial services industry working for Prudential Financial.

Favorite HFU Memory: Favorite memory was being able to get an at-large bid into the NCAA tournament my senior season. It was the first season I made it throughout my career, and even though we lost in overtime in the first round, that was a goal of mine since day one, and was finally able to accomplish it.

Favorite Class or Professor: My favorite class was my finance class. I have always been pretty good with numbers, and a lot of the material I learned in this class, I eventually would end up using in my current career.

When was the last time you visited HFU? I haven't visited HFU in probably close to eight years due to playing professionally overseas, constantly traveling, and eventually relocating to California. However, I want to make an effort to get back and visit as soon as I can.

Message for current and future Tigers:  My biggest message would be to enjoy the process. Those four years go by very fast. Make sure you are meeting a lot of people and building your network throughout your time in college. Also, start to really figure out what you want to do upon graduating. Obviously, we would all love to become professionals in our given sport, but make sure that you are working on your plan B so that you develop the skills necessary to make a smooth transition into your future long term career.
