Tigers Outlast Concordia in Five Sets, 3-2




Bronxville, N.Y. - The Holy Family University women's volleyball team came away with a 3-2 victory at Concordia College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest on Saturday afternoon at the Meyer Athletic Center.
 
Holy Family improves to 5-9 overall and 3-1 in the CACC, while Concordia falls to 1-5 overall and 0-4 in conference action.
 
The Tigers opened the match with a 25-22 victory in the first set, but fell behind 2-1 in the match after dropping the next two sets by the score of 25-23 and 25-16.
 
However, Holy Family went on to tie the match with a victory in set number four.  The Tigers opened the set leading 6-1 and would go on to lead by double-digits late in the set.  An attack error by the Clippers made the score 21-11 as Holy Family.
 
Concordia though bounced back in the set to come within two points of the Tigers lead (24-22), but by then it was to late as the Clippers clinched the set for Holy Family after a service error.
 
Holy Family took advantage of the Clippers errors throughout the match.  Concordia finished the match with 32 attack errors and 16 service errors, while the Tigers committed only 22 errors on the attack and nine on the serve.
 
In the fifth and decisive set, both teams battled back-and-forth as the Clippers maintained a slight advantage.  The Clippers led 8-7 before the Tigers tacked on back-to-back points thanks to two straight kills by junior Emma Herring (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) to give Holy Family a 9-8 lead. 
 
From there, the Tigers never relinquished the lead and went on to clinch the match with a 15-13 victory.
 
Junior Rachel Johnson (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way West) led the Tigers with 15 kills on the attack to go along with 11 digs.  Herring finished with seven kills, while freshman Melanie Ingram (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) tallied seven kills and seven digs.
 
Senior Devyn Ingram (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) filled the stat sheet with three kills, 13 set assists, ten digs and two service aces.  Sophomore Laura Tamas (Rhode-St-Genese, Belgium) led the team with 15 digs.  Freshman Kacie Brien (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Township) totaled 20 assists to go along with four digs. 
 
For Concordia, freshman Sydney Darden recorded a match-high 18 kills, while senior Leina Braga added ten kills.  Freshman Jenny Martin finished with 47 assists, while fellow classmate Celine Arada totaled a match-high 22 digs.
 
Holy Family is back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 30 as the Tigers travel to face Goldey-Beacom College in a CACC contest.  Match time is slated for 7 p.m.
