Easton, Mass. - The Holy Family University women's tennis team dropped a non-conference match to Stonehill College by the score of 9-0 Sunday afternoon at the Charles Watt Tennis Courts.
Holy Family, ranked tenth in the recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional rankings, is now 9-8 overall, while Stonehill, ranked sixth in the region, improves to 13-2 overall.
Holy Family fell behind early after dropping all three doubles competitions. The Tigers dropped 1
st and 2
nd doubles by identical 8-3 scores and came up on the wrong side of an 8-2 decision in 3
rd doubles.
In singles action, senior
Juliana Victoria (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Unidad Educativa Nuevo Mundo) faced Stonehill freshman Bailey Paradiso at 1
st singles. Victoria took the first set by the score of 6-4, but Paradiso rallied to tie the match at 1-1 with a 6-2 victory in the second set. Paradiso went on to win the third set by the score of 10-5.
Freshman
Alina Nersesyan (Yaroslavi, Russia/) battled freshman Kirsti Toegemann at 2
nd singles as Toegemann came away with a straight set victory. Toegemann took the first set by the score of 7-6 after winning a tie-break (7-0) to take a 1-0 lead in the match. She then came away with another close victory in set two by the score of 7-5.
At third singles, junior
Steicy Castro (London, England/Norwood) came up short after a hard fought match with sophomore Merly Lawrence, who took the first set by the score of 6-4. In the second set, Castro came up short, 7-6, after dropping the tie-break, 7-5.
Stonehill went on to take all six singles competitions to complete the 9-0 victory.
Holy Family is back in action on Tuesday, March 26 as the Tigers host Division I La Salle University in a non-conference contest. Match time is set for 3:30 p.m. at the Torresdale Frankford Country Club Tennis Courts.
