A Summer to Remember

Wolfe wore 17 different uniforms during the course of the 2012 Phillies season.

Philadelphia, Pa. - Many of us have wondered over the years what goes on behind the scenes in the clubhouse and dugout during a Major League Baseball game.  Well, for junior Sport Management-Marketing major Jonathan Wolfe, he found out exactly what goes on first hand this past season.

HFU - Wolfe Dugout II
Wolfe was the batboy and clubhouse attendant for the visiting team at Citizens Bank Park for the Philadelphia Phillies during the 2012 season.

“I had a great experience during the year,” said Wolfe.  “I got a lot of memories out of it; seeing different players coming in and out of the clubhouse.  I learned what goes on behind the scenes and what it takes to get through a ball game throughout the course of the day.”

Wolfe's responsibilities included shagging balls during batting practice, setting up the dugout and bullpen before the game, setting out the team's uniforms and postgame cleanup of the dugout to name a few.

Wolfe worked under Kevin Steinhour, the Manager of the Visiting Clubhouse for the Phillies.  Steinhour had great praise for the rookie batboy.

“Jon was a tremendous asset to our staff and did an outstanding job as our batboy,” said Steinhour.  “He brings a tremendous work ethic to the job and I look forward to him working with us this upcoming season.”

For Wolfe, a typical day in a life of a clubhouse attendant for a 7:00 p.m. game began around 3:00 p.m. and didn't end sometimes til after 1:00 a.m.  However, the late hours and hard work was nothing new to Wolfe.  For the past two seasons he has also been the men's basketball manager here at Holy Family.  The long hours, hard work and trying to balance school and a social life is all part of the job.

“I could relate between the two,” said Wolfe comparing his duties as clubhouse attendant and team manager.  “You have the laundry duties and keeping everything organized for the team as well as being able to manage your time.  You get used to working the long hours.”

Holy Family men's basketball head coach R.C. Kehoe said of Wolfe, “I tell our guys all the time how important our managers are to our program.  Jon is the leader of that crew and I was very excited for him to have the opportunity he did with the Phillies.”

In addition to his clubhouse duties, Wolfe was also responsible for gathering loose balls, batting equipment and you name it during the course of the game.  Unlike the home batboy who is decked out in Phillies red and white, Wolfe donned the colors of the visiting team each time the Phillies hosted a different opponent.

Each series meant a different group of players entering the visitor's clubhouse and dugout at Citizens Bank Park, but despite the constant change, Wolfe had a set routine and went with it.

“You develop a routine and once you get it down it's all about sticking to it,” said Wolfe.  “Most teams required the same attention, which made it easier to keep the same schedule.”

And with all the different teams coming in, 17 to be exact, Wolfe had one team in particular that he enjoyed working with the most.

“The team that was the best to work with were the [New York] Mets,” said Wolfe.  They were a great group of guys and were easy to talk to, which helped make the job easier.  They made you feel like you were part of the team and were comfortable to work along side.”

The season didn't end the way many fans hoped for in Philadelphia, but for Wolfe this past summer was one to remember.

“The overall experience and the people I worked with were great,” said Wolfe.  “I was able to get to know a different team every home stand.  The best part was that some teams even remembered you from series to series when they returned to [Citizens Bank] park.”

If you missed the opportunity to see Wolfe in action this past season, you'll have the chance to see him in 2013.  Wolfe will be returning to the Phillies for a second year when the new season begins in six months.
