Lakewood, N.J. - The Holy Family University women's tennis team needed a victory in its final Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) contest to clinch a berth in the upcoming CACC Championship and that's exactly what the Tigers did defeating Georgian Court, 9-0, on Sunday afternoon in Lakewood, N.J.
Holy Family improves to 9-5 overall and wraps up conference play with a 5-3 mark, while Georgian Court is now 3-11 overall and 3-5 in the CACC.
Holy Family, earning its sixth postseason appearance under head coach
Brett Shavitz, received the number four seed in this weekend's conference semifinal match versus top-seeded Concordia College. The semifinal match is set for Saturday, Oct. 20 at Chestnut Hill College. The Tigers will face the Clippers at 10 a.m. with the winner advancing to the championship final on Sunday, Oct. 21. The other semifinal match will feature No. 2 Goldey-Beacom College and No. 3 Chestnut Hill at 1 p.m.
Against Georgian Court, the Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles competitions for the third time this week. Senior
Juliana Victoria (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Unidad Educativa Nuevo Mundo) and freshman
Alina Nersesyan (Yaroslavi, Russia/) picked up an 8-2 win at first doubles, while juniors
Steicy Castro (London, England/Norwood) and
Maja Pantelic (Palic, Serbia/) won at second doubles, 8-3.
Sophomore
Casey Borish (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) and freshman
Jacqueline Clyne (West Islip, N.Y./) capped doubles play with an 8-1 victory at third doubles.
In singles action, all six competitions were won in straight sets with Victoria leading the way at first singles. She defeated Georgian Court's Victoria Gaffney, 6-1, 6-0. Nersesyan picked up the win at second singles versus Melissa Dennis by the scores of 6-0, 6-1.
At third singles, Pantelic defeated Nicole Way (6-3, 6-0), while Castro earned the win at four singles by the score of 6-1, 6-0. Borish won her fifth singles contest as she defeated Samantha Hanson, 6-1, 6-0 and Clyne picked up the win at sixth singles defeating Vanessa Flores, 6-0, 6-1.
