Philadelphia, Pa. - The Holy Family University women's tennis team picked up a 9-0 non-conference victory over visiting St. Thomas Aquinas College Wednesday afternoon at the Torresdale Frankford Country Club Tennis Courts.
Holy Family improves to 7-5 overall with the victory, while St. Thomas Aquinas falls to 2-9 overall.
Holy Family opened the match sweeping all three doubles competitions to take a 3-0 lead. Senior
Juliana Victoria (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Unidad Educativa Nuevo Mundo) and freshman
Alina Nersesyan (Yaroslavi, Russia/) made quick work at the number one position, defeating Samantha Vinci and Candice Zugibe, 8-1.
At second doubles, juniors
Steicy Castro (London, England/Norwood) and
Maja Pantelic (Palic, Serbia/) picked up an 8-4 victory over senior Erin Maher and sophomore Faye Forman, while senior
Jennifer Sanchez (Thorndale, Pa./Coatesville) and
Jacqueline Clyne (West Islip, N.Y./) held off the Spartans junior Ana Simunovic and freshman Jill Duke by the score of 9-8. Sanchez and Clyne won the tie-break by the score of 7-3.
In singles action, Victoria defeated Simunovic in straight sets at the number one position by the scores of 6-0, 6-0. Nersesyan picked up a straight sets victory (6-1, 6-0) at second singles over Vinci, while Pantelic was victorious over Maher by the scores of 6-1, 6-0 at third singles.
Castro also won in straight sets at the number four position, defeating Forman by the scores of 6-0, 6-1. Sophomore
Casey Borish (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) came away with a victory at fifth singles with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Zugibe. Clyne capped the scoring for the Tigers with an 8-5 victory at sixth singles over Duke.
Holy Family is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 13 as the Tigers host LIU Post in a non-conference contest. Match time is slated for 1 p.m.
